Precision ID Grinding
Internal grinding is a machining process used to precisely remove material from the inside of a cylinder or conical workpiece to give the piece new internal dimensions. This process is also called inside diameter grinding, inner diameter grinding, bore grinding, or ID grinding.
At Nation Grinding, we specialize in superior internal grinding services to create precision parts. Learn more about our capabilities, the materials we use, and some of the most popular applications of inner diameter grinding.
Capabilities
We provide inner diameter grinding services for a wide range of parts made from diverse materials, including metals and non-metals.
The maximum dimensions we work with include:
- A maximum horizontal length of 96’’
- A maximum vertical grinding length of 48’’
- A maximum horizontal diameter of 30’’ or 5’’ chuck through hole
- A maximum vertical grinding diameter of 55’’
With a facility full of state-of-the-art equipment and a team of expert machining technicians, we can provide internal diameter grinding services with strict tolerances of ± 0.0001’’ to the original design’s diameter specifications, ± 0.0001’’ for cylindricity throughout the part, and ± 0.0001’’ for concentricity throughout the part. We can work with parts made from any material and can achieve surface finishes to 6 micro. We also specialize in chrome and carbide plating and coating.
Inside diameter grinding is an extremely versatile technique, and we use best practices to complete every project. We use a combination of longitudinal and plunge grinding if the grinding wheel needs to be narrower than the surface being machined. In most cases, the diameter of the grinding wheel stays between 2/3 and 4/5 of the bore diameter.
Materials
ID grinding can be used to machine hard and super-hard materials. It can also be used to produce a tapered fit or machine different diameters in a single operation.
Examples of metal materials that we can work with include:
- Aluminum
- Carbon steel
- Exotic metals
- Stainless steel
- Titanium
We also work with a range of non-metallic materials including ceramics, plastics, rubbers, and more.
Applications
We serve clients throughout multiple different industrial sectors with our inner diameter grinding services. Some of the industries we serve include:
- Aerospace
- Agriculture
- Automotive
- Marine
- Medical
- Petrochemical
- Wire
- Industrial Applications
We also specialize in creating high-quality industrial parts that can be used in precision operations. Popular applications we provide ID grinding services for include:
- Engine repair
- Gas well drilling equipment
- Gearing
- Hydraulic cylinder repair
- Spindle repair
- Tool fixtures
